New Directions Record of Achievement Day - Friday 24th June 2016

New Directions held the annual ROA last Friday. Tears were shed by some students now realising they are going into the big wide world, also some members of staff who watched their ‘fledglings’ fly the nest, as it were. Students nominated for Wraparound Student of the Year included;

Paris – Vinnie Chadwick,
Lisbon – Nadean Marshall,
Tokyo – Stuart Wallace,
London – Emma Smith
Athens – Sophie Bryant.

Nadean Marshall was also nominated as New Directions Overall Student of the Year, for Year 11. The two fantastic speakers, Troy Townsend from ‘Kick it Out’ and Bianca Westwood  from ‘Sky Sports’ gave a deep and thoughtful insight into their personal experiences,  similar to some of our cohort, even managing to engage our students, as they listened intently and respectfully to their stories. All in all it was a really pleasant and rewarding event that was well received by all who attended.

My Bnk Project

From Monday 6th July to Friday 10th July, New Directions students took part in the My Bnk Mind Your Own Business project and got a taste of what it is like to set up and run their own business. Students worked really hard to come up with ideas, budgeting and making products before taking them to Queens Market and putting their sales skills to the test.

Students sold homemade jams and sweets and set up their own raffle to raise over £200 which they chose to use to show their support of one of our students, Promise, who has been hospitalised due to a serious illness.

Students decided to buy trainers for their friend Promise to cheer him up and donated the rest to his family to show their support and to help cover costs of his stay in hospital.

The donation was presented by students on Friday 10th and the speech that Mrs Nkenda gave in thanks was moving and inspirational.

We are very proud of our students for all of their hard work and we look forward to seeing Promise fit and well soon!
